Dyngus/Solidarity Day celebrations take place in South Bend

It has been a Michiana tradition for decades celebrating fun, food and politics.  It's known as Dyngus Day for some and Solidarity Day for others.  "I've been Dyngusing since I was five years old," says Rep. Jackie Walorski.  Walorski started her day at the Republican Headquarters in South Bend.  "This is kind of for us, like the big political kick-off," says Walorski.

South Bend Deputy Mayor Mark Neal was at a Democratic celebration on the south side of town.  Like most places that were celebrating Dyngus Day, Polish sausage was a staple.  "Half Polish, have to have some sausage," remarked Neal.

Republicans and Democrats were also playing nice with each other....sort of.  "It is about the Democrats today, if [Republicans] would like to they can come in," said Westside Democratic Club President Timothy Hudak. "They cannot talk with the media or on the stage or put up any signage, but they're welcome to come talk to the people one on one, and I would love to give classes if they would like to start their own day doing this."

On the west side of South Bend, people were celebrating Solidarity Day.  In the wake of recent violence in South Bend, some say solidarity and coming together is something youth need to know.

"If you got a beef there are different ways to settle it rather than getting violent and this is right now we got to get the youth to understand that they go and do violent things, and that won't answer their problem.  It will just make it worse," says Garnett Keeys of South Bend.

Two streets in South Bend got renamed as well.  South Warren street got renamed "Dyngus Day Drive" and Laurel Street got renamed, "Solidarity Day Drive."
