Ivy Tech looking to convert former Hall of Fame building into culinary center

Ivy Tech wants to turn the old College Football Hall of Fame building into the new home for their culinary education program.

According to the South Bend Mayor's office, Ivy Tech and the City of South Bend have reached an agreement to try to convert the 52,000-square-foot building into the Ivy Tech Culinary Arts & Food Education Center, as part of their Hospitality Administration Program

The proposal will be presented by the South Bend Department of Community Investment at Thursday's Redevelopment Commission meeting. The city will request a six-month period, and the option to extend the period an extra two months, to prove it is feasible to convert the facility and to secure public and private funding sources.

“This is a bold vision for the City of South Bend to embrace urban agriculture, while adding a strong educational and social anchor in the downtown area,” said Deputy Mayor Mark Neal in a news release.

There are few details available at this time about the proposal. The City says it does plan to keep the existing gridiron plaza a public space for performances and events. There is no word yet on the proposed cost for this project.
