South Bend Regional Airport is going from a regional airport to an International Airport. Airport officials announced Wednesday that international flights are in the works for Mexico and Bahamas, and they are looking into future flights to Europe, including Ireland.

“While we will continue to speak with airlines regarding domestic air service development, industry experts will tell you the growth is in international travel,” said SBN Executive Director Mike Daigle. “This announcement has been over 18 months in the making and I’m thrilled to finally be able to share the good news with our community.”

The airport plans to have the $3 million expansion ready to start flights this fall.  The addition will be funded by federal, state, and airport funds.  The airport plans to add two new facilities.  They will be a General Aviation Facility and a Federal Inspection Station.

Many local officials were there to celebrate the big announcement. Congresswoman Jackie Walorski was thrilled and says this will create an economic boom in Michiana, "Indiana is known as the crossroads of America. Now, it will be the International crossroads of America," she said.

Deputy Mayor Mark Neal said, "Mayor Pete has always talked about the global economy. This will help our companies that are already global, and help other companies to go global."

Daigle says that it will take time to deal with flight carriers and add new International destinations. He says the airport is looking to add Cancun because, "Nearly 16,000 people travel to Cancun from this area. Getting the destination on lock is the easy part, but it's finding the best flight carrier for the job," he says.

Daigle also says in the coming months, the airport will be announcing a new domestic flight destination.
