Elkhart County Sheriff travels to Nevada for rancher dispute

Posted:
Elkhart County Sheriff, Brad Rogers spent his weekend in Nevada, but not to visit the Hoover Dam or gamble in Las Vegas.

Rogers says he was invited by Oath Keepers, a group that's devoted to defending the Constitution, to visit a ranch in Bunkerville, Nevada that is the center of controversy. Rogers is a member of Oath Keepers and Constitutional Sheriff's and Peace Officers Association. He says Oath Keepers paid for the trip and that it was on his own time.

A cattle round-up on public property has sparked a stand-off between militia members and federal agents. Rancher Cliven Bundy has been grazing his cattle on federal grounds in Clark County illegally for decades. The federal government started rounding them up three weeks ago, but stopped after armed protesters interfered.

Rogers says the situation is nearing a boiling point. "It's very dangerous," says Rogers. "It can boil over at any moment." He fears there could be bloodshed between federal agents and Bundy's supporters.

Rogers says he visited the ranch to see if there's a peaceful resolution. Rogers says Clark County Sheriff  Douglas Gillespie wasn't approachable, but says he's hoping to get to him through the media. "I went there to encourage the Clark County Sheriff to intervene because Mr. Bundy told me he said, 'I will submit to the local Sheriff.' To me, that's a no-brainer."

Rogers says he's not saying Bundy hasn't done anything wrong, but he can empathize with his situation. "I'm empathetic to Bundy because of the federal overreach and the heavy-handed way that they're doing it," says Rogers.

Rogers also says he made the trip because something similar could happen here in Elkhart County. "Quite frankly, something similiar, although not cattle issues, but something similar could happen here with a federal agency," says Rogers.

Not everyone has empathy for Bundy and his supporters. In fact, Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid said he believes the supporters are quote "domestic terrorists." Reid says Bundy isn't paying his taxes and is thumbing his nose at the Federal Government.

FOX28's Amanda Fay will have more with Sheriff Rogers on his trip to Nevada on FOX28 News at 10.
