SBPD updating fleet with new pursuit vehicles.

The South Bend Police Department is getting new cars for their fleet.  The new cars are Ford Police Interceptor Sedans.

Captain Phil Trent says the sedans will serve them better than the current Chevy Impalas they are using because of their all-wheel drive.  Trent says after this past snowy winter, it became abundantly clear they needed the new cars.

"It's not about speed, especially in the snow.  It's all about actually being able to make it to the call without getting stuck," said Capt. Trent.  He says officers didn't get stuck in the snow this winter, they did have to take alternate routes a few times.  On a call when seconds count, Trent says having to reroute can have dire consequences.

They have only bought a couple of cars so far, but the South Bend Police Department is expecting to buy 30-40 new vehicles over the next year.
