Elkhart hosts 26th Arbor Day celebration

Posted:
Hundreds made their way to the Elkhart Environmental Center on Saturday to join in on the City of Elkhart's 26th Arbor Day celebration. The event offered a number of activities to those in attendance. Some of the attractions included live log milling, the opportunity to sign up to adopt a tree and demonstrations on tree planting and care for them.

Elkhart Mayor Dick Moore gave an Arbor Day Proclamation towards the beginning of the event. Some of the sponsors who participated include the Olive Garden restaurant who provided food and the Crossing School in Elkhart which demonstrated the log milling.

Ericka Popovich is the Environmental Education Coordinator for the Elkhart Environmental Center. She says over two hundred people were on hand. She says the Arbor Day Celebration is not only a fun event, but also one that helps to educate.

"[People] have an opportunity to take a tree home and pick a place that they're going to plant that tree and watch it grow up with their kids, maybe their grand-kids some day,” Popovich said. “And we want them to know what those trees are going to do for them, for the community."

A member of the Arbor Day Foundation also recognized the Elkhart Environmental Center for their 17th Tree City USA Growth Award. That award is given to communities who go above and beyond to celebrate trees in their area.
