ReStore in South Bend hosts Earth Day Festival

The Habitat for Humanity ReStore in South Bend held an Earth Day Festival, Saturday afternoon. The celebration was the first time the ReStore held such an event and it was meant to bring the community together to teach them about the importance of recycling.

There was food and music to create a fun atmosphere for those in attendance. There were also up-cycling classes for both children and adults to learn how to use waste materials to make new items. Other tents included craft vendors, a free clothing exchange, electronic recycling, paper shredding and free crafts for the kids.

"Earth Day fits in fabulously with the ReStore and what were trying to do is keep things out of the landfill, reuse things that are reusable. So we really just wanted to do some kind of thing that got people excited about recycling," South Bend ReStore Manager Vivian Bolen.

People were given free punch cards when they arrived. If they visited all of the tents and had their card validated, they would receive 30 percent off of their purchase on Saturday at either the South Bend or Mishawaka ReStore.

Bolen says she hopes this can become an annual event. If it does, the festival would be held on the last Saturday of April to coincide with Earth day which is April 22.
