Nearly one million people gathered in Vatican City as Pope Francis canonized two of his recent predecessors. Pope John XXIII and Pope John Paul II were declared saints on Sunday, marking the first time in history two Popes were declared saints on the same day.

Members of Catholic churches in Elkhart shared their thoughts on Pope John XXIII and Pope John Paul II entering sainthood.

Father Glenn Kohrman is a pastor at St. Vincent de Paul Catholic Parish. He spoke very fondly of the two former Popes. "They have embraced the truth of Christ and their lives basically reflect that love of Christ in what they say and do,” Kohrman said. “And so they're held up as a worthy example that emulates what it means to be a Christian."

Father Jason Freiburger is the pastor at St. Thomas the Apostle Catholic Church. He said what made this such a special event was that there are a great deal of living people who saw Pope John XXIII or Pope John Paul II during their time as leaders. "Both of them were Popes who went about and really brought the church to the world so that the world could know the church," Freiburger said.

Pope John Paul II helped topple communism while Pope John XXIII is noted for having convened the second Vatican Council.
