Northridge's Ritchie going to IU hoping to walk-on

Northridge forward Nate Ritchie experienced quite the media whirlwind Monday morning after btownbanners.com released an article claiming the Raiders star accepted a preferred walk-on spot with the Indiana University basketball team; which was even news to Ritchie.

"I have no idea where this is coming from," Ritchie told FOX28.

For the past several months Ritchie has been in contact with the Hoosiers coaching staff, but has yet to receive a firm offer from the basketball program. Ritchie's coach at Northridge, Ronnie Thomas, speculated the IU walk-on spots might not be filled until the team fills their scholarship positions first.

According to Ritchie, he does plan to attend Indiana University after he graduates from Northridge and hopes that head coach Tom Crean will give him an opportunity to walk-on the team. The Raiders forward had offers to play division one basketball at other schools, like Tulsa, but chose to enroll at Indiana instead, despite the possibility he may not get an opportunity to play there.

"It's pretty simple," said Ritchie. "I feel like IU is a better fit for me."

Ritchie says Indiana University's medical school was a big part of the reason he decided to go there. Additionally Ritchie grew up dreaming of playing for the Hoosiers, so if the opportunity presents itself even albeit a walk-on role, he would embrace that chance with open arms.
