South Bend Common Council passes resolution regarding Chase Tower

The South Bend Common Council unanimously approved a resolution that's a step towards improvements for South Bend's tallest building. It's now called "Tower at Washington Square."

The resolution designates the property an economic revitalization area for the purposes of a four year tax abatement.

FOX28 talked with the building manager, Andrew Nemeth, who said the owner is planning to invest $5 or $6 million in initial repairs to the building. Repairs are planned for elevators, the garage, windows, the roof and the heating and cooling system.

"As long as I've been around, its always been somewhat of a community icon and I hope we're able to achieve a level of greatness that has been escaping from the building for quite some time now," says Nemeth.

Nemeth is hoping the initial repairs will bring in more tenants. As far as long term improvements, it's not known yet what the owner's plans are for the hotel portion of the building.
