South Bend animal control ordinance vote delayed

A big issue the South Bend Common Council was supposed to take up on Monday, has been delayed. That's the animal control ordinance.

Councilwoman Valerie Schey says after a number of public hearings on the ordinance, an amendment has been made to the licensing requirement. The ordinance will reduce the cost and allow people to license their pet online. She's hoping it will prompt more people to comply with the requirement.

"Perhaps if we have better compliance with our licensing program, that would increase the revenues that we're collecting and ultimately we can provide even better programs for residents and pet lovers alike," says Schey.

The ordinance also includes the elimination of pet limits and the elimination of breed-based discrimination.

If you have questions about the ordinance, there will be a special meeting Tuesday in Council Chambers at 5:30pm to learn more.

A vote is scheduled for May 28th.
