AFL-CIO marks Workers' Memorial Day

Many people face dangers on the job every day.  On Monday, The North Central Indiana AFL-CIO held a ceremony to remember workers from our area who have died on the job. The AFL-CIO says 203 Hoosier Workers died at work in 2013 across the state.

The ceremony honored Ryan Adams, Mark Ellsworth, Jr., Eugene Lasarenko, Bruce Ruisard, Mark Werbianskyj and Rick Pertics.

They hold the ceremony every year on April 28th because that's the day in 1970 that marked the passage of the Occupational Safety and Health Act.

The AFL-CIO says that changed workplaces for the better, but there's still more work to do.  "Even one workplace fatality is too much because a workplace fatality is something that happens because we as people failed,"  says Tony Flora with the AFL-CIO.  "We failed to have a safe enough workplace and to educate people about safety.  That's why we're here. "

The AFL-CIO says an average of 13 people were killed every day in 2011 at workplaces in the United States.
