UPDATE: Trial date pushed back for Robert Griffin in shooting death of 2-year-old

Posted:
Robert Griffin's trial for the shooting death of two-year-old John Swoveland, Jr. has been pushed back to November.

The defense team for Griffin, 19, filed a motion for continuance Wednesday, citing the large amount of discovery evidence present. Without objection from prosecutors, Griffin's Aug. 18 trial was rescheduled for Nov. 12.

Griffin is charged with murder and attempted murder for his alleged role in the fatal shooting of Swoveland on April 9. According to County Metro Homicide investigators, Griffin was involved in a shooting between rival gangs that resulted in Swoveland being shot in the chest and killed while he played in the front yard of his uncle's home on Campeau St. three blocks away.

Court papers say Griffin, a member of the "Eastside" or "Evilside" gang, pulled out a handgun and shot at a "Westside" gang member. After which, Police say the second murder suspect in the case, Tarez Buchanon, also a member of the "Eastside" gang, opened fire. None of the bullets hit their intended target.
