South Bend Common Council members visit with neighbors about public safety concerns

Posted:
South Bend Common Council members are responding to the Violence. Council members Derek Dieter, Tim Scott, Karen White, and Fred Ferlic put on their walking shoes and went door to door, talking with neighbors about concerns in their community.

"I think it's important that they see us. That we're visible. That they can touch us. And most importantly, that they can share their concerns and those concerns will be heard," says White.

They started the year-long program in a neighborhood that just experienced gun violence. Eighteen-year-old Nathan Hall was shot and killed while riding his bike near Elwood and Adams.

The man who lives on that corner told council members the crime has shaken his family. "My wife doesn't let my son go around the neighborhood on his bike anymore. It's gonna take her a little while to get comfortable," says Nikcolis Wilson. Wilson grew up in the north side of South Bend and loves his neighborhood. He told council members he'd like to see more patrol officers. "A lot of the young kids. When they see police, they scatter. They run. But at the same time, the police bring comfort to me and my family," he says.

Some other concerns?  Vacant homes and cars running stop signs near bus stops. Council members will bring that information back to the full Council.

"The first things is is you gotta gather the data before you can put action items in place," says Councilman Tim Scott.
Councilman Fred Ferlic says, "It's mandatory that this year's council do something about crime and that the administration support us."

Council members will visit a different neighborhood every couple of weeks. They're also passing out books to kids on their walks.
