Clay's Buchanon living the dream at ND

Former South Bend Clay star Jarrod Buchanon may have decided to run track at Notre Dame only four years ago, but it was a goal that started long before then.

"This is like a dream come true," said Buchanon, who runs sprints and hurdles for the Irish. "It's what I've been waiting for my entire life."

Buchanon grew up just a few miles from the golden dome and made it a goal to attend Notre Dame when he was a kid.

Now in his senior season, the Colonials grad is having one his best seasons with the Fighting Irish, setting a few new personal records.

"For me and another senior it's our last year, so we just want to go out with a bang," said Buchanon.

Buchanon did not get to this point on talent alone. In high school he made sure to work hard on the track and also in the classroom. At Notre Dame, he's continued to pushing himself.

"You have to be ready physically and mentally. If you're not prepared for both then you definitely won't be as successful," said Buchanon.

The hard work has certainly paid off. Last season Buchanon earned All-BIG EAST honors and was also an All-American Honorable Mention.

His coaches believe part of the reason he's been so successful is because he's living out a life long dream.

"He's been a Notre Dame fan his whole life and his life long dream is finally here," said Notre Dame associate head track coach Alan Turner. "That's a big, big deal for local kids."

Buchanon hopes his success can show other kids in South Bend, that if they work hard enough, they too can achieve their dreams.

"There's nothing that's unobtainable. If you put your mind to it, you can do it," said Buchanon.
Buchanon is set to graduate in May with a sociology major.
