Parents of South Bend School children say they're sorry to hear about Board Member Roger Parent's resignation.

Becky Saberniak said, "darn, I wish he hadn't.  I thought the kids had a chance with him in there."  Another SBCSC parent, Angela Parker said, "I'm just really surprised and disappointed.  Our school system is in the form of a crisis with major budget cuts and stuff and I really think he should have stayed there and tried to help our city, we really needed him."

In Parent's resignation letter he says quote, "I've spent thousands of hours doing what was possible to improve the schooling of our students, with considerable success.  Now, I find that the prevailing circumstances have made it impossible for me to be productive as a trustee."

Fellow Board Member Stan Wruble said he tried to convince Parent to stay.  "I do disagree that it was impossible for him to be productive.  I thought he was an extremely productive board member," said Wruble, "I don't think the board is dysfunctional."

Still, Wruble said he and Parent shared some of the same frustrations and visions for the future.  "The laws have changed, the demographics have changed and we can't keep doing the same thing over and over again, that's one definition of insanity.  And so we have to be more innovative, we have to do more with less."

Whatever the motivation is, South Bend Parents said they aren't buying Parent's given reason for leaving.  "That sounds like a cop out to me.  Circumstances, what circumstances?" said Saberniak.  Parker said, "That position has its challenges but I think he should have just stayed in there and try to do the best he can do.

Superintendent of SBCSC Carole Schmidt released a statement Thursday about Parent resigning.  Her statement reads, "We are sorry to receive Mr. Parent's letter of resignation from the Board of School Trustees.  During his tenure on the Board he provided his extensive experience and leadership toward improving the district.  It is with great appreciation that we acknowledge his service and commitment to the South Bend Community School Corporation's staff, students, and families. He will be missed and we also wish him well in all future endeavors."
