Dog owners were out and about Saturday afternoon at Walker Park in Elkhart, but they were doing more than just walking their dogs. They were also raising money for a cause. The American Cancer Society hosted the Bark for Life event to battle cancer.

There were tents set up selling food, clothing, a station to cut dog nails, and pet adoption representatives. There was a costume contest held and then the dogs and their owners took a lap around the park.

Bark for Life Event Chair Rhonda Lord says she was happy to see the turnout for the cause. "Dogs are care givers to people with cancer and they also are prone to getting cancer," Lord said.

Dr. Jill Windy is a veterinarian at Noah's Landing Pet Care Clinic, but she is also a cancer survivor. She has been cancer free for just a year. "This event really helps to bring together not only survivors, and people who remember people who maybe lost their battle with cancer but also to bring together our pets. They are care givers," Windy said.

Seventy three cents of every dollar raised at the event will stay and help people in Elkhart County. The next event for the group will be their Relay for Life of Elkhart County event on May 31.The event will start at 10:00am at Goshen High School.
