"My son was only a week old when he passed away, so to have a moment to recognize his life and celebrate his life, he's still apart of our family," Amanda Zambrano said.

Zambrano, who lost her son two years ago, joined other families who have lost a child for a memorial service held at Memorial Children's Hospital in South Bend. The service was held to remember the lives of children who have passed away at Memorial Hospital.

Executive Director of Women and Children Services, Michaeleen Conlee says the service is meant to remind families that they are not alone during their grieving. "To them, it's a sense of healing and it's that sense of remembrance that their child has not been forgotten from us," Conlee said.

While the service was held for the families, there were a number of members from Memorial Hospital who came to show support. "We have several physicians here, lots of nurses that have been able to come down and visit with the families and some of them have taken care of their children," Conlee said.

The service included prayers, songs, poems and a time to honor each child who has passed. Zambrano says the service makes her feel conflicted. "There's part of you that feels so grateful to not be alone,” she said. “You feel like you're the only person walking through this journey and then you look around and say 'there are too many people here.'"

Zambrano took the time to share a message to families who are or have gone through similar situations like her own. "You have a new normal now and life won't go back to the way it was, but life isn't over and there's definitely hope at the end of the day," she said.

Conlee says the number of families in attendance has grown every year. She says this year's service doubled in the amount of families. Conlee wants to continue to have a memorial service for as long as the hospital can.
