ND linebacker and teammates help tackle cancer

Posted:
The Notre Dame football team spent their weekend before finals tackling an opponent that is not on their schedule.

Sunday, some of the Irish football players were holding a second-annual Uplifting Athletes bowling event to raise money to help take down osteosarcoma, a type of bone cancer.

"This is just another time to go out and try and help kids," said Notre Dame senior kicker Kyle Brindza. "Whenever there's a cause for me to be called upon, I just come and help as much as I can."

The effort was spearheaded by senior linebacker Joe Schmidt, who looked at the Uplifting Athletes national movement as a great way for the Irish to give back to the community.

"I'm incredibly blessed by god and I just feel so fortunate," said Schmidt. "I know that's not the same for everyone. I just want to make sure that I use whatever it is I have and I give to everyone else. Its that spirit of giving. That's what Notre Dame is all about."

Money was raised for osteosarcoma research from ticket sales to get into the event and local businesses and Notre Dame fans who paid to sponsor lanes at the Strikes & Spares Event Center in Mishawaka.
