Moala moves Penn to Midwest Rugby title win

It may be his first year ever playing the sport, but Penn's Inoke Moala is already making a big impact on the Kingsmen rugby team.

Saturday, the junior, who also plays tight end on the football team, scored on three tries for the Penn Rugby Club to help them win the Midwest School Rugby Championship 40-5 over St. Edward (OH) High School.

"It's very exciting. It was a great team effort," said Moala, who was named the championship game MVP. "I got lucky on a couple plays and scored."

Moala was the first to score and the Kingsmen never trailed after that. Aaron Hancock, George Perkins, and Travis Katona also scored tries to help Penn cruise to their second consecutive Midwest title.

"I'll tell you what I really like about this year's team is, we've won several midwest titles in the past, but this is a complete team and I don't know if I've ever had a team this good," said Penn head coach Bart Bottorff. "We've won seven midwest championships and competed for 15 national championships, but this might be the best team I've had top to bottom."

According to Moala, the team has been successful this season because of the great chemistry they have on and off the field.

"I just love the chemistry that we have and the people we have," said Moala. "We have a variety of different kids on this team and it just helps that we're real close."

Penn is hoping they can build on this win and take the momentum into the Rugby National Championships starting May 15th. The national competition will also be played at the Elkhart Moose Lodge Grounds.

"I'm excited where our team is," said Bottorff. "We're primed and ready to do some damage in that. It's going to be fun."

Penn placed fourth in the national championship tournament last season.
