Where will you vote Tuesday? Elkhart County makes it convenient

Posted:
Tuesday, May 6th, marks the official day where Elkhart County will switch from polling places to voting centers. This means any location that's best suited to your proximity and schedule, you can vote at. As viewed on the Elkhart County Clerk's web page, "Vote centers provide convenience to the voters, and also reduce the number of workers each political party needs to recruit, thus reducing payroll costs for the county election board."

Before the 2014 election, the County had 117 polling centers that were assigned to residents depending on their home address. Now, there are only 25 voting centers spread throughout Elkhart County, but voters can choose where they want to vote, whether it's close to home, their children's school, work, etc.

Elkhart County Clerk Wendy Hudson says by switching to the voting centers, the County will save over $50,000 in payroll costs. "There's 9 workers at each voting center. Before, we had to staff for 117 polling places. That was a lot of people, and it was too difficult to get that many people to sign up to help," says Hudson.

Chris Anderson is the Elkhart County Chief Deputy of the Court, and Election Supervisor for this year's election. He says although there are fewer voting centers around the county, previous polling places were in charge of their own set-up and tear-down. Now, the county is responsible for the set-up and tear-down for each of the 25 voting centers. "It's been very chaotic running around to each location to set up the computers and software, but it will make for a fast and smooth election day in the long run," says Anderson.

Not only will the voting centers save money when it comes to payroll, but also when it comes time to buying new equipment. "The machines we have were bought in 2002, so they're about 12 years old. That's old when it comes to technology. To have to buy equipment for just 25 voting centers is going to save the county a lot of money in the future," says Anderson.

Anderson says the county will save $125,000 just on paper ballot waste alone. He says the Elkhart County Council and the County Commissioners asked the clerk's office to look into voting centers back in 2012. "This has been our baby, and it's finally becoming a reality," says Anderson.
