Donation drive kicks off for local veterans

Posted:
Kernan's Hero's, a program designed to assist homeless veterans in St. Joseph County, is hosting a donation drive to collect items needed by local homeless veteran's.  The drive kicked off Monday at American Legion Post 357 located at 5414 W Sample St. in South Bend.  Former Indiana Governor Joe Kernan was on hand to promote the importance of this drive.

Kernan says many people in St. Joseph County have no idea how many homeless veterans there really are.  "The life treatment center, in downtown South Bend houses at any one time, fifteen to twenty veterans," Kernan said, "and helps them with substance abuse, detoxification, programs to help them get back on their feet."  Kernan estimates there are around 100 homeless veterans living in the downtown South Bend area.

Patriot Officer for VFW 360, Michael D Wells says it is hard to comprehend what these veterans are going through when they come home.  "When I came home, I was a wreck," Wells said, "and I have gone through my own struggles, these men, I just can't imagine.  I've always had support. I have always had a home to live in. I have always had running hot water. I have always had hygiene. I have always had what I needed.  I couldn't imagine what it is like to live in this shelter and not have what you need."

Donation items needed include clothing, personal hygiene products (shampoo, soap, deodorant, toothbrush, toothpaste, lotion, sun block, razors), blankets, pillows, cleaning supplies, etc.
