UPDATE: Man dies after falling in Genoa grain bin

Posted: Updated:
GENOA (WREX) - UPDATE 2:
Genoa-Kingston fire officials said Leon Madey died after falling into a grain bin on his family's farm.

Chief Bruce Kozlowski said Madey's death appears to be an accident.  Madey was with his son, Kozlowski said, when he went to work on the bin.  His son called 911 after he could not locate his father.

Kozlowski said rescuers first searched outbuildings, but quickly realized Madey must have been in the bin.  They found his body in the corn that was drained out of the bin.  Several local farmers helped sift through the estimated 14 tractor trailer's worth of corn.

Madey was a retired firefighter with the Genoa-Kingston Fire Department, said Kozlowski.  The chief said he was a good farmer who took the safe route at every turn.

Madey leaves behind a wife and four adult children, according to Kozlowski.

UPDATE 1:
The man has been removed from the grain bin and taken away in an ambulance, which left the scene without lights or sirens. There is no word on his condition.

Our crew is waiting on a briefing from officials. We will update you when that becomes available.

ORIGINAL STORY:
Several agencies are on the scene of Madey Farms at 35770 Genoa Road for a 73-year-old man possibly stuck inside a grain bin.

Lt. Andy Sullivan with the DeKalb County Police Department says the call came in about 12:44 p.m. from someone who was working with the man at the site. Police believe the man is stuck inside the grain bin and crews have cut three holes in the 10,000-12,000 bushel bin's sides in an attempt to drain the structure. Lt. Sullivan said the bin was full.

Grain could be seen spilling out of the holes cut by rescue crews, who were quickly shoveling it away. The grain was then hauled away by loaders.

We have a crew at the scene and will update you with more information as it becomes available.
