St. Joseph, MI fires Deputy Director of Public Safety, suspends Director

The city of St. Joseph has fired Deputy Director of Public Safety Al DiBrito and suspended Director of Public Safety Mark Clapp.  This announcement was given by City Manager Richard Lewis at a news conference Tuesday morning at city hall. Lewis read from a prepared statement and did not take any questions.

Few details were provided on the reason for the firing and suspension. Lewis said multiple public safety officers voiced serious concerns regarding the conduct of Dibrito and the decision was made that the future of the department would be jeopardized if he remained as Deputy Director.

Lewis also said that Clapp was suspended for a week for inappropriate comments. He said the comments constituted a violation of city policy and he will be disciplined with a week of unpaid leave. The nature of Clapp's comments were not revealed.

FOX28 left voicemails with the mayor's office and every member of the St. Joseph City Commission. City Commissioner Mary Goff refused comment on the issue.
