Cancer vaccine study comes to Michiana

Posted:
A vaccine,  the first of its kind to come to Michiana, could save the lives of many battling cancer.  The Memorial Regional Medical Cancer Center is enrolling patients in two national cancer vaccine clinical trials to help prevent breast cancer and prostate cancer.

Dr. Thomas Reid, who's heading the study, says the cancer center has vaccinated 2 to 3 patients for a breast cancer study, but they are still looking for men battling prostate cancer to participate in the study. Dr. Reid says patients as far as Milwaukee have contacted the cancer center to participate. He says it's important to know this vaccination is only for patients who been been diagnosed with breast cancer or prostate cancer.

The prostate cancer investigational vaccine is administered through a series of injections over a 5 month period. It's designed to teach the body's immune system to recognize and destroy prostate cancer cells. Dr. Reid says many men diagnosed with prostate cancer have the risk of the cancer spreading. "This vaccine is designed for men whose prostate cancer has spread, specifically to major areas like the bones," says Dr. Reid.
The breast cancer vaccine is designed to stimulate a patient's immune system to recognize and destroy breast cancer cells. The trial is 36 months with 40 visits over a 3 year period.

A description of both clinical trials can be found here.
