Public plea for School Board member to not resign

Public plea for School Board member to not resign

Posted:
Wednesday night, the South Bend School Board met for the first time since one of its members handed in his resignation.  Roger Parent is set to step down at the end of the month.  He sent his letter of resignation last week but he wouldn't do an interview then, and he still won't.

But others are talking.  During the School Board meeting, South Bend Schools parent and grandparent Veronica Smith said, "You should be willing to ride this train out with the community til the end of your term to give the votes a chance to make a choice of who will go in your place."  South Bend resident Samuel Brown said, "I hope that he would change his mind, there's nothing wrong with stepping down and stepping back up."

It was a plea from the public during the public comment section of the meeting for Parent to stay.  "As a parent advocate and a voter I do not accept your resignation from the school board," said Smith.

Board Member Bill Sniadecki also spoke up asking Parent to stay saying, "the public voted you in and I'd like to see you stick out your term.  There is no shame is saying you're coming back. "

Before the meeting Parent told said he wouldn't talk about his resignation.  After the meeting, and the public plea for him to stay, we asked him again to talk and respond to the show of support.  He again said no.

School Board President Michelle Engel did talk saying she wasn't expecting this, to lose a third board member in her four years on the board.
"I was surprised, very surprised," said Engel.

Engel said they're losing years of experience but they're now looking to replace Parent.  "I'm looking for, I think the board is looking for someone with a passion for public education and service to the community."

Engel said by law, they have 30 days from Parent's last day to replace him.  His resignation is effective May 31st.

If you are interested in the position there is more information here.

The deadline is June 9th and Engel says they will probably conduct interviews the week after that.
