City of South Bend shuts doors on Vine Restaurant

A South Bend restaurant has been shut down by the city over not paying back taxes and rent.  The City of South Bend owns the space that had been occupied by The Vine restaurant.  Director of Business Development Chris Fielding says the restaurant owners owed $38,000 in taxes, rent, and late fees.

Fielding says that bill had accumulated over the past 6 months.  Before that, The Vine had been in the space next to the Morris Theater for about four years.

The city changed the locks and is conducting an inventory of the items inside the building to assess their ability to recoup losses.  Fielding says the building, especially the kitchen area, is in disrepair.  The city has already determined that pipes are leaking and there are fire-code violations.

The city is not concerned about how this will impact the appeal of the city.  Fielding says this is the only restaurant space in downtown that is not occupied by a tenant.
