UPDATE: The Vine restaurant open and up to date on rent again

Posted:
A downtown South Bend restaurant has reopened after paying the city $38,000 in overdue rent and fees.  The Vine on Colfax has been renting space from the city for years, but the city says the restaurant had fallen behind on rent payments to the tune of $38,000. So Friday morning, the city changed the locks.

The Director of Business Development, Chris Fielding says, he realizes it's graduation weekend and many people had reservations, but he says the city had to act.
"We owe it to the taxpayers to be fiscally responsible and there's no reason for people who work everyday and pay their taxes to have to subsidize a restaurant that's not paying their rent. I don't think that's fair," said Fielding.

When FOX28 stopped by the restaurant, Saturday, it was open again.
The owner wasn't available for comment, but an employee said they were calling customers to confirm their reservations for this weekend.

A statement from city attorney, Cristal Brisco said, representatives from The Vine
met with City officials Saturday morning and paid a little over half of the agreed-upon payment. The City still had the keys and access to the property.  Representatives from The Vine said they'd pay the rest, Monday morning, which the city confirmed with us Monday afternoon.

The Mayor's Office says The Vine has "resumed full operational control of the premises at this time. [And] the Vine's current lease with the City, set to expire at the end of June, remains in effect.

A court hearing to discuss further concerns is scheduled for May 16th.
