Warm temps bringing people and business to the beach

Michiana saw warmer temperatures throughout the week. Warm enough to get people to break out their bathing suits. That was the case at Silver Beach in St. Joseph, Michigan.

Beckett Lockerbie was at Silver Beach with her family and some friends."It's been a very cold winter and you know Michigan, you have to take advantage of these days," she said. "Kids hopped into the water and then off they went and then they started running down the pier so we've been here a little bit longer than we thought," she said.

There were lots of people taking in some sun and making their way out into the water. "I'm so happy. I haven't swam in forever. I can't wait to get out onto the lake," Ben Pejka said.

There were people playing volleyball, kids playing in the sand and boats on the water. While the weather brought many out to the beach, the temperature of the water was a different story.

"It was pretty cold. Not too bad," Zach Pejka said.

"They tried to force me in but I didn't really want to go," Ben Pejka said.

"A little cold but it was fun," Jack Lockerbie said.

It wasn't just the people making their way over to Silver Beach who were enjoying the warm weather. Local St. Joseph business, Kilwin's, saw a number of customers coming through their doors for a scoop of ice cream.

"Mother's Day weekend is always great, always busy. Families getting out. It's great," shift supervisor Matthew Burrows said.

Despite the harsh and lengthy winter, Burrows says the business made it through the season as a result of the community. However, he says business did slow down a bit. "It was a lot less foot traffic. I think that cold weather kind of put a damper on people's feelings and that desire to get outside," Burrows said.

As temperatures rise and warmer days continue, Burrows says he sees business start to pick up even more. "It's ramping up. Just getting that energy back that you kind of miss sometimes when you have the quieter season," Burrows said.

Many of the people we spoke with say it was their first time at the beach this year. Silver Beach opened its season this month.
