UPDATE: Moped driver killed after accident with semi in South Bend

Posted:
A moped driver has been killed and a major South Bend intersection has been closed after an accident with a semi truck.

The accident happened shortly after 10:00am near the intersection of Lincoln Way E. and Sample St.  According to police at the scene, the motorcyclist was hit by the semi after he ignored a traffic signal. The semi tried to stop to avoid a collision but could not, and the moped driver was pulled under the semi and pinned under a wheel along with his vehicle.

He was taken to a nearby hospital, where St. Joseph County Coroner Chuck Hurley says he was declared dead due to blunt-force trauma injuries.  Police say it appears the moped driver was not wearing a helmet at the time of the crash.  Our crew at the scene noticed a large amount of blood visible at the site of the crash

South Bend Police confirmed the intersection of Lincoln Way and Sample St. will remain closed for a long period of time as they investigate. Currently, Lincoln Way is closed from Miami St. to the Eddy St. entrance.
