South Bend Common Council: Smoking ban tabled for 60 days

Those attending the South Bend Common Council meeting Monday night in hopes of hearing a decision on whether or not smoking would be banned in bars will have to wait a little bit longer.

The council voted 5-3 to table the smoking ban for 60 days.

Dozens of community members came out for the meeting. In fact, so many people showed up, the fire department had to turn some of them away. During the public comment portion of the meeting, several people spoke on both sides of the issue. Those for the ban argue that this is about public health but those against it argue that it will hurt business and smokers will leave the City.

After the vote Gary Weese of Jeannie's tavern, a smoking establishment, said, "I'm pleased. I think that gives us some time to figure this out as several people mentioned it's a complicated issue and there are a lot of passionate arguments on both sides but I think everyone recognized that business is important and I'm really pleased the council was willing to take some time to consider that."

Carl Nichols of the Minority Health Coalition told us, "I'm extremely frustrated, I want to get in my car and drive as fast as I can home but I can't cause there's ordinances and laws against that to protect me, to protect other people, so we're disappointed obviously."

The South Bend Common Council will consider the issue again July 14th. In the next 60 days they've asked for more outreach to local businesses from supporters of this ordinance.
