Kate Cobb: The Heart of Elkhart Central

In the three seconds it takes a shortstop to field a softball and throw to first the average heart will beat 3 times. However, that's not always the case for Elkhart Central's Kate Cobb.

"I was born with a heart condition," said Cobb. "It's called supraventricular tachycardia."

The Blue Blazers senior recently had to start wearing a heart monitor because of her condition. If her heart rate reaches a certain point it can mean trouble.

"What happens is my heart rate will speed up to over 200 beats per minute and I will instantly start getting light headed and dizzy and my world will just start spinning around," said Cobb.

The fear of dealing with this condition would discourage most teenagers from any sort of activity, but Cobb doesn't let it stop her from doing what she loves; being part of the team.

"Sports are a lot more to me than just playing a game," said Cobb. "It's about building a sense of community and family with your teammates."

Despite her heart problem, her coaches say, Cobb still plays with as much heart as anyone.

"I think it's amazing," said Brent Bardo, the Elkhart Central softball coach. "A lot of kids would quit or they'd be scared. She doesn't do any of the above. She just goes all out 100 percent of the time."

Right now she's playing softball for the Blazers, but the volleyball court is where she really shines.

Her favorite sport can cause her the most problems physically, though she says the emotional reward of helping her team get a win, greatly outweighs anything that could happen to her.

"I like fast paced, on the go, diving, sweating (chuckles), going after balls," said Cobb.

Cobb only has a few games left in her softball career. It isn't her heart that's pulling her away, it's just the calendar. And a college volleyball scholarship.

"It's almost weird to say next year I'll only be playing one sports," said Cobb. "But I'm definitely cherishing [these last few games]."
