E-Learning: Completion numbers are out!

Posted:
Penn Harris Madison Schools had 9 school days they had to make up thanks to the grueling winter we had. But to keep the kids from having an extra week of school, PHM enrolled in E-Learning to make up 3 days of school. All assignments were due Monday, but the schools report there's still some students who didn't finish.

Assistant Superintendent Kay Antonelli says PHM Schools had to make up 9 snow days. Two were waived by the state, 4 were built into the year, and 3 were made up with E-Learning. "A day of E-Learning would need to be commensurate with a day of instruction, so depending on what grade a child was in a student had to complete 15 to 18 hours of e-learning," says Antonelli.

"Some parents thought the lessons were a little too time intensive," she says.

FOX28's Faran Fronczak spoke to many parents who were NOT happy about the E-Learning assignments, but who didn't want to go on camera. Many parents were vocal on the FOX28 Facebook page saying they had to juggle homework on top of E-Learning and would rather have days be added at the end of the year.

Antonelli says across the board... the schools are 75% complete. The numbers are in for the number of students that have completed their E-Learning , a web-based instruction students had to complete to make up for snow days.  Penn-Harris-Madison schools implemented the program to avoid having to extend the school year further into June.

The numbers are as follows:
Grissom Middle - 75%
Discovery Middle - 80 -100%
Schmucker Middle - 80 - 95%
Walt Disney - 75%
ALL PHM Schools- 80 - 95%

But what happens to the students who haven't finished??? Antonelli says, they are being treated as homework that has to be done by the end of the year, and it does count toward a student's grade.

PHM says they've never had to deal with 9 missed days of school, so to find out how parents liked e-learning, they'll be sending out a survey next week. "We do want to see if we need to make adjustments. Were the assignments too time intensive?" says Antonelli.

And as they weight all that out, Antonelli says they hope future winters won't leave the district with this unusual situation again.
