St. Joseph County considering vote center for election next year

The St. Joseph County Clerks office is looking to make some changes to how the county does elections in the future.

On Wednesday, staffers were reviewing the last election to address issues with the primary election on May 6.  County Clerk Terri Rethlake says they had a few issues, such as cancellation of votes, precinct volunteers not showing up, and precincts opening late.  She does say, the issues weren't more common than in previous years though.

Only about 6.5% of eligible voters turned out for the primary elections last week. Rethlake hopes vote centers could help with that problem.  The county has set up a committee to look into implementing vote centers like the ones used by Elkhart County in the primary.  In addition to making it easier for voters to cast their ballots, vote centers mean the county would need fewer staffers and machines during elections.

Rethlake hopes the county will have vote centers in place for next year's municipal elections.
