UPDATE: Larceny suspect arrested near Marquette Primary was out on bond for burglary charges

Posted:
A South Bend primary school was briefly placed on lockdown Thursday morning as police searched for a suspect in the area.

Police say the police placed Marquette Primary Montessori Academy on lockdown after a larceny in progress was reported nearby just after 10:15 am. According to Capt. Phil Trent, the larceny took place at a residence in the 2200 block of Portage Ave. The school, located on the 1800 block of Bergan St., is approximately two blocks away.

Police say the suspect was apprehended just after noon, and was identified as Jose Carlos Cabral. They say Cabral was apprehended after an extensive search that ended with him being bitten by a K9 unit. Trent says Cabral is currently hospitalized for minor injuries stemming from the bite, and will be charged with larceny and resisting arrest.

According to Trent, Cabral had bonded out of the St. Joseph County jail on May 12, where he was being held for two felony burglary charges.
