Elkhart honors the police department with memorial ceremony

The Elkhart Police Department honored and remembered past and present officers Thursday at the Lerner Theater.  The names of five Elkhart police officers who have died in the line of duty were read and a wreath was set on stage to honor the men.  The police department also honored current officers who have gone above and beyond the line of duty by presenting them medals.

Elkhart Mayor, Dick Moore said there is no other Mayor alive who is more proud of his police department than he is.  He said it is important to take the time to appreciate and remember them like Thursday's memorial did.  "So many years of service, so many years of protection, what a comfort level we have reached knowing that we have a fine police organization," Moore said, "today is that moment in time that we can show them that we have that appreciation."

Sunday, May 11 through Saturday, May 17 is National Police Week.
