Indiana, local unemployment rates continue to drop

The number of unemployed in Indiana continued to drop in April. According to numbers released by the Indiana Department of Workforce Development, the seasonally-adjusted rate fell 0.2 percent to 5.7 percent in April. The national rate in April was 6.3 percent.

The state also showed growth in the number of private sector jobs added and the total labor force. The state says 4,400 private sector jobs were added in the month, led by jobs in Trade, Transportation and Utilities. The labor force increased by 11,700, the seventh straight month of growth. The state says Indiana's labor force participation rate exceeded the national rate in April for the first time since July of 2009.

Every local county and city measured in the report saw unemployment drop during the month of April. Several saw drops of 1 percent or more. Elkhart County, which at one point in 2009 topped 18 percent, fell 0.8 percent to 5.0 percent in April. Kosciusko County shows the lowest unemployment in the area, falling 0.9 percent in April to 4.1 percent.
