$1.7 million to fund Elkhart city roads

If you live near the City of Elkhart, prepare to see lots of road repairs this summer. The Elkhart common council approved an appropriation of 1.7 million dollars on Monday for a total road repaving around the city.

"Normally in the winters we can spend about one million dollars on our streets and keep them pretty well-maintained," says Mayor Dick Moore.

This summer, the city will mill nearly two inches of pavement and replace that with fresh asphalt. Mayor Moore says patching simply won't be enough for the roads to withstand another winter.

"Hopefully they'll also recognize that letting them go, or just patching those little holes that are out there is not the right way to go. We need to bring them back up, because the roads that we're going to do now are not going to do that next winter."

The projects are set to be completed before next winter. There are several areas on the list for re-paving:

Indiana from Benham to SR 19

Benham from Hively to Mishawaka

Prairie from Lusher to Indiana

California from CR3 to SR19

Johnweaver from CR10 to SR19

East Bristol from Garden to Johnson

Bentoak Tr. from Clubhouse to CR7

Bullard Rd. From CR15 to Middlebury
