Fire training held at South Bend Airport

Firefighters at the South Bend Airport are ready for any emergency situation.

Wednesday morning they conducted their annual live fire training.  Individuals from the Clay Fire Department also took part in the exercise.

"We are required by federal law that all airport firefighters have to conduct at least one live fire training every year.  That's what we're doing here today," says Chief Mike Ornat of the South Bend Airport.

The training consists of two exercises: combating interior fires and exterior fires.

"We focus on these two scenarios because these are the two that are most likely to occur.  Interior fires take place inside of the fuselage which is why we have one set up here." says Ornat.

For the exterior fire they use a special method called the truck attack.

"With the truck we can do an initial knockdown real quick, really the truck is there to provide a path if passengers are trying to get off the plane," says Captain Kevin Mutaszak.

Chief Ornat hopes that training like this will show that they are constantly sharpening their skills.
