Commission meets to review Indiana/Michigan border

The Indiana-Michigan Boundary Line Commission met for the first time Wednesday in South Bend.  The Commission was appointed by the Governors of both state, to establish the state line between the two states.  This will be the first time this has been done since the line was set in 1837.

The Commission will be in charge of setting contracts and hiring qualified surveyors to complete the project.  Both states will evenly split the cost of the project.

Indiana-Michigan Boundary Line Commission Chairman, John McNamara says it is important to establish where the line is for many reasons.  "Right now, no one knows where the line is," McNamara said, "so you have problems with police enforcement, you have problems with taxes, and you have problems with assessments."

The process is expected to take four years to be completed.
