Trial date set for suspect in Swoveland killing

A suspect charged in connection with the shooting death of 2-year-old John Swoveland in South Bend had his trial date set Monday.

Xavier Primm, 23, had his motion for a speedy trial granted by a St. Joseph County judge Monday. He is scheduled to be in court again at the end of July, and his trial is set to begin on August 11. Primm turned himself into police in Decatur, IL on May 5, and waived his right to an extradition hearing.

Primm is charged with Assisting a Criminal, a Class C Felony, for his alleged role in Swoveland's killing. Swoveland was shot and killed on April 9 in front of his uncle's residence on Campeau St. in South Bend as he was playing with a sibling. Police believe he was hit with a stray bullet after a shooting between rival groups.
