New S.W.A.T. vehicle makes its debut in Mishawaka

When you're driving down the street, you may notice a large vehicle that resembles a tank.  Well, that's the new St. Joseph County Metro SWAT vehicle.

St. Joseph County Metro received a donated US Military Mine-Resistant Ambush-Protected Vehicle, dubbed M.R.A.P.  It normally costs $733,000 dollars, but the department got it for FREE thanks to a military surplus.

The new S.W.A.T. vehicle was designed for troop transport and ambulance services, but the county plans to use it for active shooter situations and the transport of people and services during disaster situations, like the grueling winter we just had.

The St. Joseph County Metro S.W.A.T. Team, comprising of officers from the Mishawaka and St. Joseph Co. Police Departments, entered into the federal program and was selected as one of the departments nationwide to receive one of the upgraded M.R.A.P. vehicles.

The vehicle itself was produced by BAE systems in Sealy, Texas, where St. Joseph County Metro picked it up, and drove it up in a semi-truck. You may be wondering if this is a refurbished hand-me-down by the military, but the county received it completely brand new, with only 8 miles on it!  Mishawaka received shipment direct from the factory.

The new SW.A.T. vehicle is scheduled to make a debut in the Mishawaka Memorial Day Parade on Monday.
