New well may offer permanent relief for Rum Village residents experiencing flooding

Rum Village residents are about to get more permanent relief from flooding thanks to a new well installed by the city.  Residents of the South Bend community started experiencing more flooding when the New Energy ethanol plant nearby shut down in November 2012.

The plant used to pump millions of gallons of water out of the ground each day, but with them shutdown, the water had no where to go. In February of 2013, the facility's new owner, Connecticut-based Noble Americas, began operating the pumps, providing some temporary relief and reducing groundwater levels.

Common Council President Oliver Davis says the well installation will ensure that "flooding and moisture problems will not be a problem again for nearby property owners."

A ribbon-cutting ceremony marking the installation will be held Wednesday at 11:00am at 3000 W. Calvert Street.
