South Bend making it easier to voice your opinions on City Parks

Getting people involved in city government isn't always easy.  Right now, the City of South Bend is having a tough time getting feedback from certain neighborhoods on an important issue; improving the city's parks.

They're trying to make it easier, for example, if your neighborhood park needs repairs or you have ideas like adding grills or benches. Now all you have to do is pick up the phone.

Constance Green has lived near Lasalle Park on the City's West Side her entire life.  She'd like to see several improvements at her local park. "The crud and the mud, the broken sidewalks," said Green, "we'd like for you to clean up and upgrade the conditions of the park."

What she's saying is exactly what South Bend leaders want to hear.  The City's Parks and Recreation Department is putting together a five year master plan on what parks to improve and how to improve them.  Deputy Mayor Mark Neal said,  "We have 57 parks in South Bend, every one is a treasured asset for our community, but we know there's some opportunity for us to improve them."

But Green said she and her neighbors are skeptical.  "The neighborhood has spoke for 5,6,7,8,9,10 years and there's still nothing being done."

She said that's why the City may not be getting the feedback they'd like about Lasalle Park.  "What I hear from parents, from people in the community is they're tired of the repetition," said Green.

The City said, this time their voices will be heard but people are going to need to speak up again.  And now there's a new way called  CityVoice.  Simply put, you just call a phone number and leave your comments.

Director of the South Bend Department of Public Works, Phil St. Clair said, "I think with the addition of CityVoice this is gonna be the most comprehensive feedback we've ever had."

You can find the website for the South Bend Parks Master plan here.  On the site you can take a survey about your local park.  If you'd like to call and leave your feedback the number for CityVoice is  855-690-9359.
