Michigan Governor Rick Snyder signs legislation calling for a minimum wage increase

Posted:
LANSING, Mich. (AP) -- Michigan's Republican Gov. Rick Snyder has signed legislation that gradually increases the state's minimum wage to $9.25 an hour by 2018.

Legislative leaders have said the measure was intended to circumvent a pending ballot initiative to increase the hourly minimum to $10.10.  The current hourly wage is $7.40.  The Republican-led House voted 76-34 and the GOP-controlled Senate 24-12 Tuesday to send the bill to Snyder.

The compromise was struck a day before a committee turns in petition signatures for the higher minimum wage hike.  The new law includes a provision requiring the minimum wage to grow with inflation once it hits $9.25 an hour. It also raises the wage for workers who get tips to 38 percent of the minimum wage.
