Clay Intermediate School placed on lockdown after fights breakout between multiple groups

Posted:
Clay Intermediate School in South Bend was placed on lockdown for a little over an hour this morning after several fights broke out between multiple "groups" of students.

St. Joseph County dispatchers and South Bend Schools officials say the principal of Clay Intermediate placed the school on lockdown shortly after 7:40am when a fight broke out between "groups of students." The fight reportedly began before classes started, while students were gathered together in the gymnasium. The lockdown ended shortly after 9:40am, after officers took a child into custody and brought them to the St. Joseph County Juvenile Justice Center.

In a statement, South Bend Schools spokesperson Sue Coney said the lockdown was called "in an effort to ensure the safety of all students as well as to investigate and resolve the conflicts." Coney says students were held in their classroom throughout the lockdown, and parents were notified of the lockdown by an automated call system. Coney also says no injuries were suffered during the altercation, but the students involved will face disciplinary action.

While the lockdown has been lifted, Coney says teachers have been instructed to be extra vigilant in supervising hallways.
