Even the experts can't explain South Bend's current gas price hike

Posted:
If you waited until Wednesday to fill up your gas tank after the holiday weekend, you just might have a case of sticker shock!  Gas prices shot up at many stations in the South Bend area to $3.99 per gallon.

Gas price hikes aren't uncommon, but the experts at GasBuddy.com are at a loss to explain why the prices are climbing right now in South Bend.  "I don't know what's going on,"  says Patrick DeHaan, Senior Petroleum Analyst at GasBuddy.com.  He says this is one of the rare times where the numbers don't really add up.  "I don't see a justification for the higher prices," he says.

DeHaan says wholesale prices actually declined a few cents per gallon Tuesday.  He says that normally gives stations a bit of breathing room. "But this time around my numbers just don't add up to what we saw today," he says.  "It's a surprise that does happen maybe once a year."

As bad as it may have felt to dish out the extra cash Wednesday, DeHaan does believe the price hike will be temporary.  "I think the bigger issue is how this price hike occurred or why it occurred," he says.  "Prices will always go down after they go up this much, but I'm sitting here scratching my head just wondering how the heck this even happened."

Remember you can always find the lowest prices where you live by following the link to GasBuddy on our website!
