South Bend hospital offering patients new prostate cancer treatment option

Memorial Regional Cancer Center in South Bend is offering a new therapy treatment for prostate cancer patients.

Hospital officials say this treatment (Xofigo or Ra 223 Dichloride) is used for men who have a very aggressive type of prostate cancer that is resistant to medical or surgical treatments which lower testosterone.

Radiation Oncologist, Dr. David Hornback says it seems promising. "We know from studies that were published last year that use of this medicine in men who have this resistant form of prostate cancer actually gives those men a longer length of life, better overall survival, and their quality of life is better," Dr. Hornback says.

240,000 new cases of prostate cancer will be diagnosed this year alone.

Correction: The original story said this treatment was a clinical trial.  It is not.  It is a new treatment.
