Lillian Lewis of Three Oaks, Michigan was ordained on Saturday afternoon by the Roman Catholic Womenpriests. Lewis was told by Kalamazoo Bishop Paul Bradley she would face excommunication from the Catholic Church if she was ordained.

Bishop Joan Houk of the Roman Catholic Womenpriests led the ordination which was held as scheduled.

"I'm feeling wonderful. I'm so happy," Lewis said. “I feel so affirmed."

Lewis was ordained at 75. She says becoming ordained has been on her bucket list and she was determined to make it happen. "It's a good example for those people who want to fold up and make their life smaller and smaller as they get older but I think you can make it bigger and bigger," Lewis said.

Family and friends gathered in the backyard of Lewis' home. People came from all over with a good chunk of the crowd making their way from the Chicagoland area. One of those people included Oak Park, Illinois resident Frank Hulefeld. "Lil has been a dedicated, lifelong, committed, religious person. And I think this is her calling," Hulefeld said.

Stephen Shimek and Lewis have been married for 29 years. He fully supports his wife in her ordination. "Lil has been prepared for this her whole life. I was a priest and she taught me more about priesthood than I learned in the seminary," Shimek said.

The ordination was supposed to be held at a church in Three Oaks but the church dropped out. Regardless of the location, Shimek was just happy to see his wife ordained. "People used to be ordained by acclamation from the people. Well these are people who are clapping for Lil to be a priest. That's called ordination."

Hoak asked those in attendance who were upset with Bishop Bradley to forgive him saying he was following Canon Law. Canon Law 1024 states only a baptized male can be ordain.
