Bell brings friends to Benton Harbor football camp

Before he was crossing the goal line for the Detroit Lions, Joique Bell was a star for the Benton Harbor Tigers with dreams of one day making the NFL.

Despite becoming a mainstay as a third down and goal line back for Detroit, that does not mean he forgot where he came from.

Saturday, "The Bell of Benton Harbor" was back on his home field for his annual football camp and was joined by some pretty big names. Lions star wide receiver Calvin Johnson was there to help out and so was NFC north rival Greg Jennings.

"It's the way we give back," said Johnson. "We share our time and hope that one day when they get to where they want to be that they comeback and give to their community as well."

Bell worked on football skills with the kid, but also wanted to stress the importance of getting an education. He told campers he is currently in the process of getting his masters degree in criminal justice.

"A sign of I can do it, not somebody from the outside saying that, but somebody from here, born and raised here, saying I did it," said Bell. "That's all I'm trying to bring to this community is that work ethic and that resilience, and I think the kids are getting it."

Saturday night Bell, former Tigers star Wilson Chandler, who now plays for the Denver Nuggets, and some of the other NFL players hosted a charity basketball game at Benton Harbor High School.
